Smoky Lake County is seeking an experienced and focused individual to join our team as the Lead Mechanic/Maintenance Coordinator. The Lead Mechanic/Maintenance Coordinator will be a key member of the County's management team, playing a crucial role in supporting initiatives across all departments.
Position Summary: This permanent full-time position requires a competent, motivated individual who will complete scheduled maintenance of the County’s fleet vehicles and equipment and urgent repairs that may arise, performing overhauls, routine maintenance, and preventative maintenance inspections. Working amongst a team of experienced management staff, the Lead Mechanic/Maintenance Coordinator is the key person who manages the day-to-day operations of all fleet vehicles and equipment. This this position offers an equal balance of on-the-tools mechanical work and fleet management oversight.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Oversee fleet and asset management, ensuring equipment is maintained, tracked, and utilized efficiently to maximize service life and reduce downtime.
- Develop and implement fleet maintenance strategies, including scheduling, cost tracking, and lifecycle planning.
- Monitor equipment markets and industry trends to make informed decisions on sourcing parts, purchasing equipment, and determining cost-effective repair versus replacement options.
- Oversee all aspects of the shop staff and shop operations, including but not limited to job safety checklists, timesheets, work orders.
- Ensure all municipal assets and equipment are managed and maintained in accordance with current regulations, best practices, and policies.
- Be competent and proficient in all aspects of light and heavy-duty equipment testing, diagnosing, and repair of diesel and gasoline engines, fuel systems, emission systems, electronic systems, and hydraulic systems.
- Perform required repairs, inspections and preventive maintenance on fleet vehicle and equipment to maximize the safety, productivity, and life of the unit.
- Schedule routine maintenance on fleet vehicles and equipment to ensure maintenance is up to date.
- Manage a team of mechanics and any apprentices in all aspects of diagnostics and repairs to County fleet equipment.
- Conduct C.V.I.P.’s on equipment according to Provincial standards.
- Maintain inventory procedures and review daily vehicle and equipment checklists.
- Oversee the ordering of parts, supplies, products, and materials effectively with appropriate suppliers.
- Cultivate a respectful work environment committed to the health, safety, and wellness of all employees and cooperate with the County’s Joint Health and Safety Committee.
- Support staff training and professional development to ensure that licensing and permitting requirements are met.
- Support positive relationships by working closely with other managers and departments.
- Assist with the annual operating budgets and capital budgets.
- Administer funds in accordance with the County’s approved Annual Budget and monitor expenditures.
- Resolve and troubleshoot problems as they arise.
- Attend Council meetings, as required and provide detailed reports and information with recommendations for Council to consider in decision making.
- Conduct ongoing research into new service technologies and trends, provides recommendations for improvements, and when accepted is responsible for their implementation.

Credentials Required:
- Valid Journeyman Certificate of Qualifications in Heavy Duty Mechanic.
- Valid Alberta Driver’s License (Class 1 preferred) with a clean Driver Abstract.
- Valid Commercial Vehicle Inspection Technician License.
- Clean Criminal Record Check.
- Comprehensive knowledge of road construction and heavy equipment.
- Understanding of Provincial and Federal Safety Legislation.
- Proficient in the following software: Microsoft Office, Cat SIS & ET, Cummins Insite, Quickserve, and Snap-On Scanner.
- Knowledgeable of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations affecting municipal operations.
- Ability to prepare and manage budget documents and contracts.
- Management experience is considered an asset, particularly in overseeing shop operations, leading a team of mechanics, and ensuring efficient workflow and quality control.
