Public Works Operator I
Summary of Functions:
Under the direction of the Operations Director or their designate, the incumbent is responsible for routine maintenance and operation of all services required for Public Works operations.
Education:
- Completion of a high school diploma or the equivalent.
- Must have good communication skills (i.e. reading and writing skills) including the ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.
- Valid Class 3 or 1 Driver’s License – drivers abstract required for successful candidate.
- Valid Airbrake Endorsement.
- Must be able to operate machinery (physical limitations must be known prior to employment).
- 2+ Years’ experience operating machinery such as bobcat, backhoe, wheel loader and packer.
- Physically capable of manual labor including standing and lifting.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operates mechanical equipment which is associated with roads, sidewalks, storm sewer construction and repair, including but not limited to operation of trucks, tractors, packers or rotovators and bobcat wheel-loader.
- May be required to work in confined space as well as at heights (training will be offered).
- Operates mechanical equipment as it relates to winter operational requirements.
- Performs minor maintenance on the equipment such as fueling, changing oil, greasing, washing, etc.
- Performs manual labor duties related to transportation and such as solid waste collection, repairs and maintenance of roadways, sidewalks, street signs and alleyways.
- May be required to help out on utilities side when needed e.g. (utility digs, sewer flushing and catch basin repairs).
- Assisting in preparation for special events by erecting decorations, lights (Christmas), flags, banners, etc.
- Adheres to all safety procedures.
- Must be a team player.
- Must be able to work rotational standby.
- Must be willing to work overtime.
- Willing to work toward required certification levels in parks/roads and utilities.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Types of Physical Exertion:
- Lifting weights exceeding 15 kg and up to an approximate maximum of 25 kg.
- Walking on uneven surfaces.
- Stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
- Climb stairs and ladders.
