The District Chief - West is a senior leadership role within the Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority (BRFA), responsible for overseeing the operational readiness, emergency response, and strategic development of fire, rescue, and incident management across the region and within the assigned district.
Reporting directly to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), this position ensures the effective support and coordination of fire suppression, rescue operations, and fire prevention initiatives. This role is specifically responsible for the leadership and oversight of the Equipment and Maintenance Supervisor and associated programs.

Core Duties and Responsibilities
1. Operational Leadership & Emergency Response
- Provide incident support and oversight for fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials, and emergency medical response.
- Ensure deployment of personnel and resources to emergency incidents across the region.
- Maintain situational awareness during large-scale emergencies and coordinate multi-agency responses.
- Perform incident command functions and lead post-incident reviews
- Recommend operational improvements.
2. Fleet and Facilities Management (Primary Focus)
- Provide strategic oversight and operational leadership for fleet, apparatus, equipment, and facility maintenance programs.
- Ensure readiness and compliance with regulatory/safety standards and manage lifecycle planning for all assets.
- Oversee maintenance personnel, contracts, and budgets, including procurement and vendor coordination.
- Support emergency readiness through the continuous improvement of maintenance systems and practices.
3. Fire Prevention & Community Risk Reduction
- Participate in fire prevention programs, public education, inspections, and code enforcement.
- Identify and mitigate regional fire risks in collaboration with fire inspectors and community stakeholders.
- Promote community safety initiatives such as smoke alarm programs and awareness campaigns.
4. Administration & Personnel Leadership
- Assist in developing and implementing department policies, procedures, and Guidelines.
- Support budget preparation and administration.
- Foster a positive and professional work culture through strong leadership and mentorship of officers and firefighters.
- Conduct performance evaluations, coaching, and conflict resolution.
- Promote mental health, wellness, and firefighter safety programs.
Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma or degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Emergency Management, or a related field.
- 5+ years of progressive experience in a municipal setting (or equivalent municipal experience) including progressively responsible management roles.
- NFPA Standards: 1001 Level II, 1002, 1021 Level II, 1041 Level II, and 1051 Level I
- Command & Safety: Incident Command System (ICS) 300 and Safety Codes Officer (Group B Level 2, Group C Level 2)
- Current Class 3 Driver’s License with Q endorsement.
- Registration as an EMR or Paramedic is preferred.
