Transportation Supervisor
Position Summary:
The Transportation Supervisor is responsible for the day‑to‑day leadership, planning, and oversight of the Town’s transportation and landfill operations. This role ensures the effective delivery of maintenance programs, including road patching, sidewalk replacement, and curb and gutter rehabilitation. The Supervisor manages operational budgets, provides input into capital planning, and ensures all work is completed in alignment with municipal standards, safety requirements, and regulatory obligations. This position also oversees operations at the Town’s Class III landfill, ensuring compliance with environmental and operational regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Supervision

Provide daily leadership, guidance, and mentorship to transportation and landfill staff.

Foster a positive, safety‑focused workplace culture by leading through example.

Conduct performance evaluations, support staff development, and participate in recruitment processes.

Coordinate work schedules, assignments, and resource allocation to ensure efficient operations.
Operational Management
-
Oversee maintenance programs including:

Road patching and pavement preservation
-
Sidewalk replacement and repair
-
Curb and gutter maintenance
-
Monitor and manage the department’s operating budget, ensuring cost‑effective use of resources.

Provide technical input and recommendations for capital projects and long‑term infrastructure planning.

Ensure timely completion of work orders, inspections, and service requests.
Landfill Operations
-
Supervise daily operations at the Town’s Class III landfill.

Ensure compliance with provincial regulations, municipal bylaws, and environmental standards.

Oversee waste handling, site maintenance, record‑keeping, and reporting requirements.

Coordinate with contractors, regulators, and internal departments as needed.
Safety & Compliance
-
Demonstrate and enforce strict adherence to the Town’s Safety Program.

Ensure compliance with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation.

Conduct safety meetings, toolbox talks, and hazard assessments.

Promote safe work practices and ensure staff are properly trained and equipped.
Municipal Coordination
-
Collaborate with other municipal departments to support integrated service delivery.

Provide input into municipal planning processes, budgets, and operational strategies.

Respond to public inquiries and concerns in a professional and timely manner.
Qualifications:

Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience, preferably in municipal public works, transportation, or related fields.

Strong understanding of municipal operations, organizational structure, and service delivery.

Demonstrated knowledge of Alberta OHS legislation and municipal safety programs.

Experience with road maintenance, infrastructure rehabilitation, and landfill operations.

Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate, coach, and support staff.

Effective communication, organizational, and problem‑solving abilities.

Valid Class 5 driver’s licence (Class 3 or higher considered an asset).
-
Relevant certifications (e.g., landfill operations, safety training, supervisory courses) are considered an asset.
Working Conditions

Combination of office and field work in varying weather conditions.
-
Participation in on‑call rotation or after‑hours response as required.

Use of municipal vehicles, equipment, and PPE.
